Common activation problems and how to fix them
"This product key has already been used"
The key is tied to another installation or account. A perpetual key covers one device; it does not transfer by reinstalling. If you have several keys, try the next. If you bought it, contact the seller — a key that fails on first use was almost certainly sold more than once.
Office says "Unlicensed Product" after working fine
Usually the sign-in has expired rather than the licence. Open any Office app, go to File → Account, sign out and sign back in with the account the licence is attached to. If your organisation uses several Microsoft accounts, confirm you are signing in with the right one.
Activation fails with a network or connection error
Activation needs to reach Microsoft's servers. A captive portal, a restrictive office firewall or an unstable mobile connection will all block it silently. Try again on a different connection before assuming the key is faulty.
An older Office version blocks the new install
Remove the previous version first. Two Office versions on one machine cause file associations to fight, and activation is often the first casualty.
The key is rejected as invalid
Check for the usual transcription errors — a zero read as the letter O, a 1 read as I, a trailing space pasted in from a message. Type it manually rather than pasting if it keeps failing.
